According to tradition only local Munich beer is allowed to be served in the tents at Oktoberfest. Each brewery offers many different varieties of their beer as well as a special Oktoberfest brew. Here’s a overview of all six Munich Oktoberfest-breweries and their special brews. All cost between 9 and 10 Euros for one liter of beer.

Augustiner
Established in 1328,Augustiner Bräu is
Munich's oldest still independent brewery and produces Munich's most popular
brands of beer. Augustiner-Oktoberfest-bier
(6% alcohol) is light golden in color and tastes malty and sweet with
citrus and grass notes.

Hacker Pschorr
Hacker-Pschorr Brewery traces its
ancestry back to 1417 when the Hacker brewery was founded in Munich, Germany, 99 years before the enactment of the Reinheitsgebot Purity Law of
1516. The brewing process has remained
virtually unchanged for over 580 years. The
Oktoberfest-Märzen has a light brown body and a pleasing malty taste with a
spicy hop at the finish. One of the most popular brews.

SpatenSpaten-Franziskaner-Bräu
is owned by the Spaten-Löwenbräu-Gruppe which
is part of the Belgo-Brazilian company Anheuser-Busch. In 1397, the Welser Prew was
alluded to for the first time in Munich. The ownership changed often until
1854, when the brewery moved to the location it still uses today. In 1867 it
became the largest brewery in town and in 1909 began to deliver beer to North
America. With a deep copper brown color,
the Märzen has a nice light
hop citrus scent and an earthy malt.

Paulaner
Paulaner is a German brewery, established in 1634 in Munich by the Minim friars of
the Neudeck ob der Au cloister. The mendicant order and
the brewery are named after Francis of Paola, the founder of the order. Dark gold in color, the
bier has a sweet toasty caramel and malt aroma, and a clean bready taste with
a nice bitter hop finish.

Löwenbräu
Löwenbräu was likely founded around 1383. Löwenbräu
beer has been served at every Oktoberfest in Munich since 1810. The
Oktoberfestbier has a light golden straw color, a strong sour taste and
grassy hoppy finish. This one is not for the faint of heart.

Hofbräu
The Staatliches Hofbräuhaus in München is
a brewery in Munich, owned by the Bavarian state
government. The Hof (court) comes from the brewery's history as a royal
brewery in the Kingdom of Bavaria. The Hofbräuhaus in Munich inspired
the song "oans, zwoa, g'suffa" (The Bavarian dialect for:
"one, two, down to the hatch"). The
beer which is sold in the Hofbräuzelt at Oktoberfest is golden in color and
has a honeyed, malty aroma with a nice floral slightly, zesty hop to
finish.
